The Hickory Crawdads set several season highs Friday night, but they came in some unsightly categories as the 'Dads walked 10 batters and committed three errors in their 10-2 defeat to the
The season long 3 hour and 17 minute drubbing was a group effort for the Crawdads, with five total pitchers combining to allow 10 runs on 10 hits with the 10 free passes. The 'Dads defense didn't do the pitcher any favors either, as the group combined for three miscues resulting in an unearned run.
Hickory starting pitcher Sam Stafford started the night's theme early, as the lefty hurler failed to get out of the first inning while walking four and allowing the first run of the game. Southpaw reliever Alexander Claudio followed but didn't fare much better, lasting 3.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and three more walks.
The 5-0 Intimidators lead would hold until the 6th, when the Crawdads finally broke through for a pair of runs off starter Jake Cose. DH Jordan Akins picked up an RBI double in the inning and would eventually come in to score himself on a Kannapolis error to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The temporary momentum would be short lived however, as the bullpen continued to walk batters and give up runs in the seventh. Right-hander Josh McElwee followed Stafford's lead and failed to finish his inning with five runs allowed, four earned, on three hits and two walks while recording two outs.
Coby Cowgil would finish out the game with 1.1 shutout innings, but did walk a batter as well to add to the double-digit total. The only Hickory hurler to have a good outing was Jose Leclerc, who tossed two scoreless innings on just two hits while fanning four.
Nick Williams (2-5), Preston Beck (2-3) and Luis Marte (2-3) all finished with multi-hit games for the 'Dads while Akins (1-4) picked up the only RBI.
Stafford (0-2) took the loss for his short start while Cose (2-0) earned the win for throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just two runs, one eared, one seven hits and seven Ks. Kannapolis reliever Zach Isler (2) picked up the save for shutting out the Crawdads over the final 3.1 innings on just one hit and four strikeouts.
With the loss the Crawdads (3-6) and Intimidators (6-3) have split the first two games of their series. The two clubs will battle again Saturday night at 7:05 pm in game three of their four-game set.
