The UNC Pembroke Baseball Team (29-10), ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II, defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (18-28), 14-9, Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field.
The Braves' Ben Schmucker (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a bases-clearing triple and finished with six runs batted in to lead UNC Pembroke to the victory. Brett Huffman (Salisbury, N.C.) added a home run for UNC Pembroke, who reeled off 11 consecutive runs at one point during the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne did take a 2-1 advantage thanks to a two-run single from senior outfielder Logan Senelis-Jose (Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands) in the bottom of the first inning but the lead was short-lived. Trailing by a 14-3 score entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Lenoir-Rhyne tried to rally with six runs but the deficit was too great to overcome.
L-R freshman second baseman Josh Murphy (Hudson, N.C.) delivered a two-run single in the inning but the Bears suffered their third straight setback. UNC Pembroke finished the contest with 22 hits, led by Schmucker's four hits, while Logan Cook (Valdese, N.C.) (3-1) picked up the win on the mound.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) fell to 1-4 on the year after taking the loss for the Bears on the afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when the Bears travel to Harrogate, Tenn., to face Lincoln Memorial at 4:00 p.m. UNC Pembroke, meanwhile, plays Erskine on the road Friday at 3:00 p.m.
