The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (29-12, 10-6) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Tusculum (27-16, 11-5) in L-R's home finale Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field. L-R won the first game by a 6-0 score before Tusculum rallied to salvage the split with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap. Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 6, Tusculum 0
L-R freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) improved to 13-4 on the season after throwing a three-hit shutout. Hoskins struck out five batters en route to her second consecutive shutout and ninth on the season. L-R senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bears then put the contest away with five runs over the final two innings of play. Junior third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) hit a two-run double in the fifth inning and junior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) connected on a two-run home run in the sixth to round out the scoring for the Bears.
Tusculum's Elizabeth Johnson (Greenville, Wis.) fell to 12-10 on the year after taking the loss despite going the distance. Three of the six runs Johnson allowed were unearned.
Game Two - Tusculum 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
Katie Brennan (Manassas, Va.) hit a two-run single in the first inning and Kelly King (Nazareth, Pa.) (12-6) threw a six-hit shutout to lead the Pioneers to the win and the doubleheader split. Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) fell to 15-8 on the year despite allowing two unearned runs to go along with three strikeouts in the complete game.
Lenoir-Rhyne finishes the regular season on Saturday with a league doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Harrogate, Tenn. Tusculum hosts first-place Anderson in a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
