Appalachian State University saw 28 of its student-athletes earn a spot on the Southern Conference Academic all-Conference list, released by the league office on Wednesday.
The 177 student-athletes on the team surpassed last year’s winter total by 19. All 12 SoCon institutions were represented on the team, which honored student-athletes from men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The list was topped by women’s indoor track and field, which had a total of 71 student-athletes earn the honor, followed by men’s indoor track and field (43) and women’s basketball (25). The league’s 12 women’s indoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 72, followed by men’s indoor track and field with 52 and women’s basketball with 36.
Among member institutions, Appalachian State led all schools with 28 members on the academic all-conference team. Western Carolina followed with 23, while Samford was third with 18. With Appalachian’s 28 spots on the Winter 2013 Academic all-SoCon squad, the total number of Mountaineers to earn Academic all-conference honors now comes to 61 after 33 student-athletes earned the honor in the fall.
