The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (14-23, 8-11) opened a South Atlantic Conference series with a 7-6 victory over Mars Hill (8-21, 5-12) in 10 innings Friday afternoon at Henderson Field. L-R senior shortstop Dalton Hall (Hickory, N.C.) broke a six-all tie with the game-winning, RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Bears to the win. Lenoir-Rhyne was able to hold on for the victory despite jumping out to a 4-0 advantage. Mars Hill forced extra innings when Thomas Timmerman (Aiken, S.C.) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) hit a double and a solo home run to lead the Bears offensively. Martin, who is batting .302 with five home runs and 18 RBI, was 2-4 and drove in a run. L-R sophomore Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) also drove in a pair of runs and came on in relief to pitch the final three innings and improve to 3-0 on the season. Timmerman finished with three hits and three runs batted in while Patrick Riehl (Lucasville, Ohio) fell to 2-2 after suffering the loss for the Lions, who totaled 15 hits in the contest.
The two teams will wrap up the conference series with a doubleheader on Saturday in Mars Hill, N.C., beginning at Noon. The Bears have now won three straight league games as well.
