The Mount Olive College women's tennis team swept both singles and doubles play en route to a 9-0 victory over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas action on Friday afternoon. Mount Olive's (7-5, 4-3 CC) duo of Francesca Ceppi and Molly Lentini opened the match with a hard-fought 8-5 victory over Lees-McRae's tandem of Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and Hilary Lutz (Shelby, N.C.), before Roxanne Chouinard and Maite Belloso posted an 8-0 decision against Taylor Bost (Jefferson, Ga.) and Stevie Harrell (Morganton, N.C.) in the second flight.
Samara Paldinho and Paulina Delgado gave Mount Olive a 3-0 advantage with an 8-0 victory in the third flight against LeeAnn Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) and Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.). Lentini defeated Wohlers, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, as Ceppi clinched the team win for the Trojans with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Lutz in the second flight.
Chouinard posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bost in the third flight, while Belloso defeated Harrell, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Delgado registered a 6-0, 6-0 win against Sullivan at No. 5 singles, as Nicole Karas earned a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jones in the sixth flight.
on the men's side, Lees-McRae College freshman Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) earned a hard-fought victory in the second singles flight on Friday afternoon, as the Mount Olive College men's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over the Bobcats in Conference Carolinas action.
Mount Olive's (10-1, 6-0 CC) tandem of Edgar Bub and Rik Wolthuis kicked off the day with an 8-3 victory over Lees-McRae's (0-9, 0-5 CC) duo of Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, EspĂ­rito Santo, Brazil), before Henric Falkenberg and Akio Mariano defeated Poplawski and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.), 8-2.
Brahm Moolman and Gabriel Santana registered an 8-0 victory over Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.) in the third doubles flight, and after Bub defeated Araujo, 6-2, 7-6 in at No. 1 singles, Poplawski battled to a 7-5, 6-3 win against Santana in the second flight to give the Bobcats their first point of the day.
Falkenberg would clinch the team victory for the Trojans in the third flight, posting a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Pinel, as Mariano defeated Choi, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Moolman and Jack Frampton closed out the day with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories over Artrip and Chivers, in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Wilson, N.C. to take on Barton College in league play at 1 p.m.
