On an afternoon that started strongly with back-to-back Appalachian State University victories with sophomore Haley Zagoria and senior Lauren Smith, Western Carolina rallied to capture the 7-6 victory and claim the University Cup for the second time in school history, Thursday evening at Mimosa Hills Country Club. Western Carolina earns its second University Cup, as the Catamounts improve to 2-1 against the Mountaineers since WCU became a part of the dual in 2011. On the women’s side, Zagoria had to complete the full 18-holes to fend off Fatima Carriles, as Smith captured a 4&3 victory over Mariah Hopkins. As play continued on the men’s side, freshman Caleb Keck captured the first victory, defeating Jack Walsh, 2&1. Sophomore Andrew Furr and senior Jay Brown continued to the momentum, turning in wins. With the match in favor of Western Carolina 6.5-5.5 and WCU needing seven points to win the title, Jake Williams held a 1-up advantage heading into the final hole. Catamount Tyler Lail was able to win the 18th hole and give Western Carolina the 7-6 victory.
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams return to their respective tournament schedules, as the women have a quick turnover, hosting the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on April 1-2. The men’s team returns on Saturday, April 6 at the two-day Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, N.C.
