Lenoir-Rhyne (23-8, 7-3) split a South Atlantic Conference Softball doubleheader with Catawba (23-13, 4-4) Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. The
Bears won the first game by a 2-0 score while the Indians rallied to win the second contest, 4-1.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 2, Catawba 0
L-R senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) hit a two-run home run in the first inning while freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Bears to the win.
Hole improved to 13-5 on the year after striking out four batters for her third shutout on the season.
Catawba's Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C.) took the loss despite allowing just two first-inning runs in addition to six strikeouts.
Game Two - Catawba 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
The Indians took advantage of four errors by the Bears which led to four unearned runs en route to splitting the doubleheader.
Catawba's Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, N.C.) and Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, N.C.) both connected on run-scoring doubles in the first and second innings, respectively, to give the Indians a 2-0 advantage.
L-R cut the lead in half thanks to an RBI single by senior outfielder Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) in the fourth inning but Catawba responded with a two-run fifth frame.
Tysinger (17-5), who was credited with the win in the second contest, drove in a run in the fifth inning as well for the Indians.
Tysinger pitched four scoreless innings and limited the Bears to just one hit with seven strikeouts in the victory while L-R freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) fell to 9-3 with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Mars Hill on the road Friday in Mars Hill, N.C., in a league doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Catawba hosts SAC-foe Tusculum Friday in a 1:00 p.m., doubleheader as well.
