Student-athletes, coaches and staff members from Appalachian State University’s 2012 Southern Conference title team received their championship rings during a sold-out banquet on Saturday evening at the Holmes Center. The highlight of the evening came when former Mountaineer Greg Lair, who was a member of Jerry Moore’s first Southern Conference championship squad in 1991, presented Moore with his ring. Moore’s legendary 24-year tenure as Appalachian State’s head coach came to an end after he led the Mountaineers to the SoCon title for the 10th time last season.
Senior co-captains Rod Chisholm and Jeremy Kimbrough and new head coach Scott Satterfield also made speeches during the banquet, which celebrated the Mountaineers’ record-tying 12th SoCon championship. In addition to each student-athlete, coach and staff member receiving their championship rings, the program’s seniors and individual award winners were also recognized during the two-hour event.
The championship rings, designed by Josten’s, are silver with a black face encircled with diamonds. A diamond-encrusted ‘A’ is the focal point of face of the ring, which also includes the words “SoCon Champions.” Appalachian State’s “Today I Give My All” graphic is on one side of the ring while the other side features the recipient’s name and an Appalachian helmet.
