The Newberry Baseball Team (18-13, 8-6) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 6-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (11-21, 5-11) Friday evening at Bears Field.
Newberry's Jon Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) improved to 6-0 on the season after pitching seven scoreless innings.
Rosenberger also scattered just four hits to go along with five strikeouts in the win.
Offensively, Newberry's Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) finished with two hits and a pair of runs batted in to lead the way.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) totaled four of the Bears' six hits while sophomore outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) scored L-R's lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Newberry broke a scoreless tie when Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) connected on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning which would prove to be the game-winning RBI for the Wolves.
A run-scoring triple by Camp highlighted a two-run fifth inning for Newberry before the Wolves put the contest away with a three-run eighth frame. All three runs by the Wolves in the eighth were unearned.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Eric Ryan (Baltimore, Md.) suffered the loss on the mound and fell to 1-5 on the season despite pitching into the eighth inning.
The two teams will wrap up the league weekend series with a doubleheader at Bears Field on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch of the day is set for 1:00 p.m.
