The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (10-19, 5-10) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with 14th-ranked Catawba (20-7, 10-5) Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. L-R won the first game by a 9-5 score but the Indians prevailed in the nightcap, 11-1, in seven innings.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 9, Catawba 5
L-R senior first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.) hit a pair of solo home runs as the Bears finished with five round-trippers in the victory over the Indians. The Bears took control early as sophomore outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) and Hansley hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.
Hansley and junior designated hitter Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) added home runs in the third inning as the Bears built a 7-1 lead en route to the win. Hansley now has a team-leading six home runs on the season.
L-R junior outfielder Brandon Walker (Otisville, N.Y) hit the Bears' fifth and final home run to lead off the fifth frame while L-R senior Clay Tresher (Matthews, N.C.) improved to 2-1 with the win as the starter.
For Catawba, Chris Dula (Troutman, N.C.) hit two home runs and finished with three RBI while John Tuttle (Kannapolis, N.C.) (4-4) took the defeat.
Game Two - Catawba 11, Lenoir-Rhyne 1 (seven innings)
The Indians' Ross Whitley (Mooresville, N.C.) improved to 5-0 on the year after limiting the Bears to one unearned in six innings as Catawba was able to split the doubleheader. Catawba's Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, N.C.) finished with three hits including a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Indians offensively.
Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, N.C.) added a two-run home run as part of Catawba's five-run fifth inning which broke the game open.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored its lone run on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Logan Senelis-Jose (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) in the fourth inning while junior Eric Ryan (Baltimore, Md.) fell to 1-4 after suffering the loss. L-R plays Pfeiffer in Kannapolis, N.C., at CMC-Northeast Stadium (formerly Fieldcrest Cannon) on Tuesday evening beginning at 7 p.m. Catawba hosts Kutztown (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Monday at 3 p.m.
