The 14th-ranked Catawba Baseball Team (19-6, 9-4) scored the final seven runs of the contest en route to a 7-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne (9-18, 4-9) Friday night in a South Atlantic Conference game at Newman Park.
Catawba's Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, N.C.) improved to 6-1 on the year after picking up the win on the mound. Lomascolo allowed just two runs over eight innings to go along with 11 strikeouts and earned his school-record 32nd win for his collegiate career. L-R jumped ahead in the second inning after freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) and junior third baseman Frank Poerio (Gibsonia, Pa.) drove in runs for a 2-0 advantage. Catawba took the lead for good thanks to a three-run third inning capped off by an RBI single by Chris Dula (Troutman, N.C.) which proved to be the game-winner. Holding a 4-2 lead, the Indians put the contest away with a three more runs in the seventh inning for the 7-2 final. Catawba's Keaton Hawks (Lexington, N.C.) led the Indians offensively with three hits and two runs batted in on the evening. For Lenoir-Rhyne, Poerio and senior designated hitter Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) both finished with a pair of hits while senior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) fell to 1-3 after suffering the loss on the mound. Martin was 1-4 with an RBI. The two squads will wrap up the South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Salisbury, N.C.
