Appalachian State’s Allie Cashion and Samford’s Mollie Hanson have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. The selections are made by the Southern
Conference office. Cashion, the league’s preseason Player of the Year, finished last week with a .600 batting average, a .636 on-base percentage and a 1.400 slugging percentage as the Mountaineers took two of three from Western Carolina in their first SoCon action of 2013. The senior hit two home runs over the weekend and is only 10 away from the career record at Appalachian State. Hanson started in two games for the Bulldogs last week, pitching 10.0 innings and allowing only three hits and one run with 10 strikeouts. The sophomore threw a no-hitter in Samford’s 5-0 victory over UNCG on Sunday, the school’s first no-hitter since April 21, 2006. The Dothan, Ala., native finished the week with a 0.70 ERA.
