School Calendar Scramble PDF Print

The school boards of the High County are dealing with more missed days of school this week, with 15 days—a full three weeks—missed by both Avery and Watauga, 14 for Ashe.  Avery schools said that the amount is not yet excessive, as they build in 14 days into their calendar, and at this point, they’re looking at May 30th as their last day of class. Ashe, with 14 days missed, is looking at June 3rd for the last day, and the Watauga Board of Education will be brought up to day in their Monday night meeting about the latest.  Their attempt to get in a day last Saturday was sacked with the snowstorm that cancelled school last Friday. Graduation dates are still in flux, according to most of the school systems. In the past, schools have been able to request some forgiveness in days of school with excessive weather cancellations, but with new rules in effect for school calendars coming out of Raleigh—and more on the horizon—that might not be the case this year.
