The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams opened the outdoor season with several strong performances at the 2013 L-R PowerSox Invitational Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track as part of the Moretz Sports -

Athletic Complex. On the women's side, L-R senior Elizabeth Chaffee (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:02.02.
Meanwhile, Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Tarryn Cornejo (Deland, Fla.) won the women's pole vault (8'00") and senior Samantha Levine (Wayne, N.J.) placed first in the women's javelin throw with a toss of 109'01". Levine also set a new program record in the women's hammer throw (105'10").
L-R freshman Vertrice Wilson (Carrollton, Ga.) established a new school record in the women's 100-meter hurdles (15.76), good for second place overall.
For the Lenoir-Rhyne men's squad, senior Justin McCombs (Catawba, N.C.) won the 200-meter dash (22.10) and finished second in the 400-meter dash (49.22).
Sophomore Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) placed second in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.92 seconds while Combs and Spears were the third and fourth legs, respectively, of the men's 400-meter relay team (42.31) which finished first.
Lenoir-Rhyne redshirt freshman Kevin Baxter (Columbia, S.C.) won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a school-record 14.66, a time good enough to qualify as a provisional to the D-II national outdoor finals. The former school record had stood for 37 years.
Baxter has already qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships in the men's 60-meter hurdles which takes place next weekend in Birmingham, Ala.
Finally, L-R senior Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) won the men's triple jump with a 45'2.5" and finished second in the men's long jump (21'4").
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams next compete on Saturday, March 23, in Western Carolina University's Beynon Sports Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, N.C.
