The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team (2-3, 1-0) opened Deep South Conference play with a 12-11 overtime win against Catawba (2-2, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.


L-R junior Tyler Kotch (Butler, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal just 24 seconds into the overtime as the Bears downed the Indians for the first time in three tries all-time. Kotch and junior Sam Ashton (New Market, Md.) each finished with three goals each while Ashton also added a pair of assists in the win.
Catawba was led by John Scheich (Waxhaw, N.C.), who tallied three goals and two assists on the day as well in the setback. Lenoir-Rhyne held a 4-0 lead after one period of play and was ahead by an 11-8 score with just under two minutes remaining before Catawba rallied to force overtime.
The Indians pushed the match to the extra session when Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, Md.) scored with just 26 seconds remaining in the fourth period. Kotch's game-winning goal was assisted by Ashton while junior Robert Darrow (Fort Myers, Fla.) and sophomore Ned Kaish (Atlanta, Ga.) added two goals and two assists each for the Bears in the victory.
In goal, Lenoir-Rhyne junior Steven McGhee (Durham, N.C.) earned the win after tallying 11 saves on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Catawba's goalkeeper, Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss despite making 11 stops as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne also held the edge in both shots taken (42-39) and ground balls (32-29) in the contest.
L-R returns to action next Saturday when the Bears travel to Wingate, N.C., to take on Wingate in a conference match beginning at 2 p.m. Catawba plays St. Leo (Fla.) on the road on Wednesday beginning at 7:00 p.m.

 

 

Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse Holds On To Beat Belmont Abbey, 13-12

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse Team (3-1) held on in the end to defeat Belmont Abbey (3-1), 13-12, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
L-R sophomore Mary Minick (Marietta, Ga.) led the way with a match-high four goals as the Bears jumped out to a seven-goal advantage and handed the Crusaders their first loss of the season.
The Crusaders' Katy Connery (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored three goals and assisted on five other scores in the losing effort.
L-R led by a 9-5 advantage at halftime and pushed its margin to 12-5 on a free position goal by Minick with 16:03 left in the second half.
From there, Belmont Abbey rattled off six straight goals before Minick pushed the lead to 13-11 on her fourth and final four goal of the contest with 4:54 left in regulation.
Connery scored the match's final goal 46 seconds later but Lenoir-Rhyne was able to hold on for its second straight win.
L-R also received three goals from sophomore Sarah Gioconda (Apex, N.C.) while sophomore Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) also scored twice for the Bears, who held the advantage in shots taken (29-27) in the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior goalkeeper Ashley Gruning (Jackson, N.J.) earned the win after stopping nine shots while Belmont Abbey's Danielle Ruffalo (Huntersville, N.C.) suffered the loss in goal. Ruffalo made five saves on the day.
Lenoir-Rhyne next competes in Winter Park, Fla., against Rollins on Wednesday, March 13, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Belmont Abbey, meanwhile, plays at Rollins this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
