Watauga High junior Demetre Kostis (50-1) had his hopes for a state championship squashed on Friday afternoon at the Greensboro Coliseum in
Greensboro, N.C., in the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships. Kostis lost by pinfall to Jeremy Ward of Parkland in the 132-pound weight division. Ward pinned Kostis in 1:44. Kostis will now compete in the consolation round. The Pioneers have not had a state champion since 2006; they have not had a place finisher since 2008. |
