School on Saturday? Dodging Weather Bullets PDF Print

So what are the chances Watauga County Schools will have Saturday School this week.  The county will have to dodge a couple of weather bullets, with snow in the forecast starting tonight and running through Sunday morning.  The only accumulation in the forecast at this point is for overnight tonight and early tomorrow, with snow mixing with or changing to rain by the end of the day tomorrow.  Then the temperature plunge starts, with only snow showers—and no accumulation—seen as we hit Friday and the weekend, while temperatures go no higher than the lower 30’s tomorrow through Saturday, and only in the upper 20’s Sunday.  Along with the cold temperatures, we see winds picking up especially Thursday, and wind chills by Sunday of 5 above.  So while we’re dodging all this weather, the Watauga County Schools plan to make up a missed day by holding school Saturday, March 2nd, unless schools are closed for inclement weather on Friday, March 1st. If all the weather can be navigated, Saturday school will be an early release day, with kindergarten through eighth grade students dismissing at 12:00 p.m. and the high school at 1:00p.m. Consistent with past practice for Saturday openings, pre-kindergarten classes will not meet and the afterschool program will not operate. Lunch will be served in all schools and buses will run their usual routes. Bundle up.
