Bears Drop Doubleheader Against Wingate PDF Print

The Wingate Baseball Team (9-7, 4-2) won both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over Lenoir-Rhyne (5-12, 1-5), 11-0 and 10-4, Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium. Both contests were seven innings.


Game One - Wingate 11, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
The Bulldogs' Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) threw a three-hit shutout in leading Wingate to the win. Little improved to 4-0 on the season after striking out five batters in notching his second consecutive shutout victory as well. Wingate took control early and led by a 7-0 score after three innings of play. The Bulldogs plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by a two-run single from Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio).
Wingate rounded out the scoring with a four-run fifth inning. Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) connected on a two-run double in the frame for the Bulldogs. Lenoir-Rhyne senior Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) fell to 0-2 on the year after suffering the loss.
Game Two - Wingate 10, Lenoir-Rhyne 4
Trailing by a 4-2 score, the Bulldogs rallied for the win and the doubleheader sweep by plating the final eight runs of the contest including six in the fifth inning. Freshman catcher David Martin (Boone, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning before senior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth which gave the Bears the 4-2 advantage.
However, Wingate responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by two-run home runs from both Krebs and Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.). Krebs and Yeung each finished with a pair of hits and three runs batted in while Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) improved to 1-1 on the year after pitching three scoreless innings.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, Martin had two hits and an RBI while senior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound. Martin now has a team-leading three home runs on the season. Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at Bears Field beginning at 4:00 p.m. Wingate hosts Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
