The Queens Women's Lacrosse Team (2-1) broke open a close match by scoring 14 times in the second half en route to a 21-9 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (1-1) Thursday evening in the Bears' home opener at Moretz Stadium.
The Royals' Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C.) and Nicole Forgione (Davidson, N.C.) both scored four goals each to lead Queens to the victory. Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Mary Minick (Marietta, Ga.) finished with a team-high three goals despite the loss.
The Bears tied the contest at seven on a goal by sophomore Sarah Gioconda (Apex, N.C.) just 33 seconds into the second half after trailing by a 7-2 score.
However, Queens took over from there and responded by scoring seven straight times en route to the 12-goal victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) and senior Sarah Minick (Marietta, Ga.) both finished with two goals and an assist in the setback.
Queens held the advantage in shots taken (36-25) while Lenoir-Rhyne held a 40-31 edge in ground balls in the match.
In goal, Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md.) earned the win for the Royals after stopping nine stops while sophomore Allison Senft (Marietta, Ga.) suffered the loss for the Bears. Senft finished with three saves on the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Converse next Wednesday at Moretz Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Queens returns home to face Lees-McRae on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., in a Conference Carolinas contest.
