 Lenoir-Rhyne (7-3) and Queens (6-7) split a softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field. L-R won the first contest by an 8-3 score before the Royals prevailed in the nightcap, 11-2.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Queens 3 Trailing 3-1, the Bears broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning en route to the win. The frame was highlighted by a two-run home run from junior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) and a two-run single by senior designated player Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.). Junior second baseman Ciera Cockerham (Yadkinville, N.C.) added a solo home run and drove in a pair of runs for the Bears as well. L-R freshman Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) improved to 3-1 on the season after notching the victory while Queens' Lyndey McCurry (Commerce, Ga.) fell to 2-2 after suffering the loss. Queens' Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va.) hit a solo home run for the Royals in the losing effort. Game Two - Queens 11, Lenoir-Rhyne 2 Queens' Amanda Meade (Bristow, Va.) connected on a bases-clearing triple while Miranda Cummings (Statesville, N.C.) added a three-run home run to power the Royals to the win and the split. Cummings finished with four hits and five runs batted in while Kaitlyn Bodine (Scottsville, Va.) improved to 2-2 with the victory on the mound. For Lenoir-Rhyne, freshman Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) fell to 3-2 with the loss while senior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Cockerham drove in runs in the losing effort. Lenoir-Rhyne next plays in the Catawba Invitational on Saturday against Shippensburg (10:00 a.m.) and East Stroudsburg (2:00 p.m.) in Salisbury, N.C.
