The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse Team (1-0) opened the 2013 season with an 18-12 victory over Mount Olive (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Mary Minick (Marietta, Ga.) totaled a team-high four goals while junior Kaelyn Bildsten (Westerville, Ohio) scored three times to lead the Bears to the win.
Mount Olive, in its first year as an intercollegiate program, was led by Riann Daziel's (East Hampstead, N.H.) four goals while Kara Lyon (Penn-Yan, N.Y.) added three goals in the losing effort.
The Bears held an 8-6 lead at the break before taking control at the start of the second half with four straight goals capped off by a score from Bildsten with 26:35 remaining in the contest.
The Trojans tried to come back and cut the margin to 14-11 with 7:47 left but the Bears put the match away with four consecutive goals again en route to the six-goal victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Lauren Donovan (Hollywood, Md.) and senior Sarah Minick (Marietta, Ga.) both finished with two goals and an assist as the Bears held the advantage in shots taken (35-24) as well as ground balls (14-13).
In goal, L-R junior Amanda Cotto (Fort Myers, Fla.) registered the victory after stopping eight shots while Mount Olive's Sarah Snell (Greenfield, N.H.) totaled 11 saves despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Queens in its home opener on Thursday beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Moretz Stadium while Mount Olive plays at Belmont Abbey next Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Suffers 12-10 Loss To Pfeiffer
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team (0-2) fell to Pfeiffer (2-0), 12-10, in its 2013 home opener Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.
Pfeiffer's James Shepherd (St. John, New Brunswick, CANADA) finished with a match-high four goals as the Falcons withstood a late rally by the Bears to pick up the win. Lenoir-Rhyne junior Imari Davis (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Ned Kaish (Atlanta, Ga.) each scored three goals for the Bears despite the loss.
Pfeiffer jumped out to a 10-4 lead on a goal by Derek Thomas (Georgetown, Ontario, CANADA) midway through the third period before Lenoir-Rhyne began its rally. The Bears scored the last three goals of the match, including two from Kaish, to cut the margin to two but couldn't get any closer.
Thomas and Steven Tilmon (Orlando, Fla.) also scored three times for the Falcons while Pfeiffer's Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal. Kirk finished with eight saves on the day for the Falcons, who also held the edge in shots taken (46-35) and ground balls (45-38). Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore goalkeeper Alex Squires (Lawrenceville, Ga.) suffered the setback despite tallying seven saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Lees-McRae on Wednesday in Banner Elk, N.C., starting at 5:00 p.m. Pfeiffer, meanwhile, hosts Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
