Bears Roll Over Catawba In Overtime PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (15-6, 8-5) scored 20 points in overtime en route to an 86-74 victory against Catawba (7-14, 4-9) in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Goodman Gymnasium.


L-R sophomore guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) led all scorers with 26 points including 24 after halftime while senior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) added a career-high 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Bears swept the season series from the Indians.
Dillingham scored 14 of Lenoir-Rhyne's 20 points in the extra frame and finished nine-for-11 from the field as the Bears shot 53 percent (28-of-53) in the victory.
Five players scored in double figures for Catawba led by Tyrece Little's (Greenville, N.C.) 15 points in the losing effort.
Catawba forced overtime on a three-pointer by Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA) with 10 seconds left as the two squads went into the extra frame tied at 66.
Marijosius finished with 13 points on the night and Lee Martin (Mount Airy, N.C.) added a double-double - 11 points and 10 rebounds - despite the setback.
Dillingham, who scored 12 of Lenoir-Rhyne's first 14 points in overtime, took over in the extra session. Junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) added 14 points for the Bears, who hit 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the overtime as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Brevard on Saturday in a league contest beginning at 6:00 p.m., at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium while Catawba plays Tusculum in Greeneville, Tenn., on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Indians Down Lenoir-Rhyne, 59-49

 

The Catawba Women's Basketball Team (12-9, 8-5) used a strong second half to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne (14-7, 9-4), 59-49, Wednesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference game at Goodman Gymnasium as the Bears fell out of first place in the league standings.
Catawba's Antionette McPhail (Timmonsville, S.C.) finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds as the Indians scored 40 of their 59 points after halftime en route to the win.
Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, Ga.) added 14 points off the bench as Catawba avenged a loss to Lenoir-Rhyne earlier in the season.
L-R sophomore guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) scored a team-high 11 points but was the lone player to finish in double figures for the Bears, who shot just 35 percent (20-of-58) for the contest and are now one game behind Anderson in the league race.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a slim advantage at halftime, 21-19, but Catawba took control early in the second half en route to the win.
Catawba used a 13-2 run capped off by a jump shot by Coleman to take a 38-28 advantage and stayed in front the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut the margin to three points at 40-37 on a trey by Charles with 7:16 left but Catawba responded with a 12-1 run to put the contest out of reach.
The Indians' Taylor May (China Grove, N.C.) added a double-double as well - 10 points and 11 rebounds - while junior forward Nneka Awuruonye (Charlotte, N.C.) scored nine points in the loss for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to take on Brevard on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., in a South Atlantic Conference game while Catawba travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
