Marcus Wheeler Hughes, 31, of Plumtree was arrested last Friday as citizens reported that he was acting suspiciously on the Newland campus of Mayland Community College. Arriving on the scene, Deputy Jack McCloud observed a vehicle matching the description given leaving the parking lot and followed it into the Newland Town limits. Making the vehicle stop, deputy McCloud called for back-up from a K-9 unit, and after the arrival of the additional deputy and K-9, Hughes allegedly informed deputies of a meth pipe and drugs in his pick-up truck. After reportedly locating the pipe and finding a white substance, a test showed the substance positive for methamphetamines, and Hughes was taken into custody. He’s being held at the Avery County Detention Facility under a secured bond pending an appearance in court later this month.
