 The Watauga High wrestling team had a profitable day Saturday at the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Championships at Hibriten High in Lenior, N.C.
The Pioneers produced five place finishers, including three champions, and finished fifth in the standings. Mark Townsend (39-8) won the title at 113 pounds; Gus Coffey (40-6) captured the championship at 120 pounds, and Demetre Kostis won the championship at 132 pounds. Kostis, who is 45-0 this season, was also named the NW3A/4A Conference Wrestler of the Year. Jake Page finished fourth at 160 pounds; Jeremy Critcher took third at 195. The Class 4A Western Regionals will be held February 22-23 at Cornelius-Hough High. The state finals will be held February 28- March 2 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
