Freedom High head football coach and Mike Helms will returns to work today following a week-long investigation of an assault charge that involved his son.

Helm's was charged with simple assault and jailed in Rutherford County for hitting his son Brandon, 16, a Freedom junior varsity basketball player. Helms and his son were at R-S Central High School where Brandon’s team was playing a game on Friday, February 1.
A police report said the father and son had an altercation in the hallway and the father struck the son in the face. A R-S Central school resource officer said a surveillance camera captured the incident and that Mike Helms struck Brandon with a fist.
But his wife, Barbara Helms, the girls varsity basketball coach at Hickory High, called the hit a “slap” and said it came after Brandon was “talking back” to his father.
Helms has a Feb. 21 court date in Rutherford County to answer to the assault charge. The Burke County Public Schools’ internal investigation is over, said Superintendent Larry Putnam on Friday. Helms was suspended with pay last Monday, February 11.
