No.3 Mount Olive Complete Weekend Sweep Of Bears PDF Print

The third-ranked Mount Olive Baseball Team (3-0) completed a three-game, season-opening weekend series sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne (0-3) with a 12-5 win Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. Mount Olive's Zak Orrison (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.)

finished with two hits and drove in three runs as the Trojans scored the game's first 11 runs en route to the win.
Holding a 4-0 advantage, the Trojans broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh frame. Orrison highlighted Mount Olive's seventh inning with a two-run triple.
L-R junior designated hitter Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) had a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Bears avoid the shutout. Gasque also finished with two hits in the setback.
Mount Olive's Mike Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) added a pair of hits and two runs batted in as the Trojans finished with 16 hits on the afternoon. True freshman David Martin, who played at Watauga High, went 0-3 on Sunday. He's 1-7 with a double and an RBI in this first two collegiate starts.
Mount Olive's Derek Justice (Unionville, Va.) (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings in picking up the win. Justice struck out five batters as well while L-R senior Christian Hicks (Charlotte, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne takes on Barton in a doubleheader in Asheboro, N.C., on Wednesday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Mount Olive hosts Newberry in a doubleheader next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
