A group of Watauga School supporters gathered at 5 yesterday at Mellow Mushroom on King Street, there to show support for the restaurant after an incident involving Watauga Superintendent over the holidays. With Manager Chase Luddeke writing that Superintendent Dr. David Kafitz threatened to take the restaurant off of the Pioneer Discount Card program over the dispute, the group of school supporters were there with a different message.  Retired Watauga teacher Carolina Elliot said, “A group of us are here tonight to support this family and business who has supported Watauga County Schools for many years. We’re so proud of Chase. I’ve known him for so many years.”  In an interesting sideline, Dr. Kafitz came through the restaurant while the group was there, picking up pizzas for the school board work session.  That work session ended up being all informational, with the newly-formulated board taking their training from attorney Chris Campbell of Campbell Shatley on the ins and outs of being a board of education.
