The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams kicked off the 2013 indoor season with a strong performance at the Mountaineer Open at the Holmes Convocation Center this weekend. Lenoir-Rhyne redshirt freshman
Kevin Baxter (Columbia, S.C.) placed first in the men's 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.51 seconds, which is a new L-R indoor record. The time was good enough for Baxter to qualify as a provisional for the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship which takes place March 7-9 in Birmingham, Ala. Baxter qualifies for the 60-meter hurdles event after the conversion. In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) won the men's 55-meter dash in a school-record 6.47 seconds while senior Justin McCombs (Newton, N.C.) prevailed in the men's 200-meter dash (a school-record 22.62). On the women's side, L-R freshman Vertrice Wilson (Carrollton, Ga.) won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds, a school record as well. Senior Elizabeth Chaffee (Winston-Salem, N.C.) earned a pair of school records in the women's 800-meter dash (2:32.30) and as part of the women's 1,200-meter relay squad (2:27.83). The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams continue the indoor season on February 1 and 2 at the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
