Thanks to St. Stephens High, the Fred T. Foard boys basketball team finds itself in sole possession of first place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. The Tigers, who did not play Friday night, moved into first place thanks to St. Stephens,
which knocked off Hickory, 53-42. Logan Starkey provided the fireworks as hit two three pointers in the last two minutes of the game that put the contest out of reach. Starkey finished with nine points as St. Stephens’ boys snapped a 19-game losing streak in their series with the archrival Red Tornadoes. St. Stephens (12-5, 3-2 Northwestern 3A-4A) beat Hickory (13-3, 4-1) for the first time since mid-January of 2007 and won over the Red Tornadoes at home for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. The Red Tornaodes return home to play Fred T. Foard Tuesday night. The Indians travel to Boone to play the Watauga on Tuesday. The Pioneers and the Indians find themselves just 1 1/2 games out of first place in the NW3A/4A Conference standings. But the Pioneers lead the Indians by percentage points (WHS .666-STS .600) for the No.3 seed.
