 The Watauga High wrestling team came up short against South Caldwell in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener Tuesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Spartans defeated WHS 49-17, but the Pioneers got solid performances from Mark Townsend, Gus Coffey, Demetrius Kostis and Jackson Lawley. Townsend won the major decision at 113 pounds, Coffey (at 120), Kostis (132) and Lawley (220) all won by technical fall. The Pioneers take on Hibriten at Lentz-Eggers Gym Friday night at 6 p.m.
