Lenoir-Rhyne Women Prevail Over Wingate PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (8-3, 3-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 73-56 victory over Wingate (7-6, 1-2) Wednesday evening at Cuddy

Arena. L-R sophomore guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) led all scorers with 17 points off the bench as the Bears defeated the Bulldogs for only the second time in school history on the road.
Junior forward Nneka Awuruonye (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points for the Bears, who beat the Bulldogs on the road for the first time since the 1999-00 season.
Wingate's Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with a team-high 16 points and Chantal Dunbar (Norfolk, Va.) added 15 points and 11 rebounds but the Bulldogs shot just 33 percent (21-of-64) in the loss.
The Bears jumped out to a 32-23 advantage at halftime and never saw their lead fall under six points the rest of the way.
Charles scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half while freshman guard Jordan Hiatt (Mount Airy, N.C.) finished with 11 points for the Bears, who won their third straight game.
Lenoir-Rhyne also shot 52 percent (14-of-27) in the second half of play and forced Wingate into 21 turnovers in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Brevard, N.C., to take on Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference game while Wingate next visits Mars Hill. Both South Atlantic Conference contests are scheduled to tip-off on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.


Wingate Halts Lenoir-Rhyne, 65-44


The Wingate Men's Basketball Team (7-4, 3-0) remained undefeated in South Atlantic Conference action with a 65-44 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (8-3, 1-2) Wednesday evening at Cuddy Arena.
The Bulldogs' Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added 13 points as Wingate remained tied for first place in the league standings.
Junior forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) finished with a team-high 13 points off the bench despite the loss for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Jones was also the lone player to score in doubles figures for the Bears, who shot just 30 percent (17-of-56) for the game in the loss.
Wingate jumped out to a 29-20 lead at intermission and slowly increased its lead throughout the second half as the Bulldogs held a 43-26 advantage in rebounding in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) and senior center B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) added seven points each as well in the losing effort.
L-R remains on the road to face Brevard on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., in Brevard, N.C. Wingate, meanwhile, travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to face Mars Hill in a league contest on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., as well.
