Today we will begin with snow flurries and then gradual clearing. Strong winds continue at 20-30 mph with gusts to 55 mph. our WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON today .The strong winds

kept many of us awake through the night, but it was good to look out early this morning and see a nearly full moon in a partly cloudy sky. Side roads were still in pretty rough shape this morning and even on the major highways, there were areas of snow and ice coverage. Highway 421 east of Boone was fairly clear this morning but conditions worsened traveling west and north. Watauga Sherriff’s department reports no early morning wrecks but does advise that if you don’t have to travel, sit tight until later today. Boone police report pretty much the same with side streets slick and snow covered. There is not much snow but in many areas the ice just under that light snow cover is treacherous. It’s a different story in Avery County with all roads including state highways snow covered this morning. The good news from all departments is that no major wrecks were reported. It will continue to be cold with a little warming on Monday with a rain-snow mix coming for the New Year.
