The Winston-Salem State Women's Basketball Team (5-5) dealt Lenoir-Rhyne (5-3) a 49-33 loss Monday evening in a non-conference affair at the C.E. Gaines Center. The Lady Rams' Taylar Wells
(Stafford, Va.) led all scorers with 11 points as Winston-Salem State won its third consecutive contest. Lenoir-Rhyne junior forwards Nneka Awuruonye (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ashia Mitchell (Spartanburg, S.C.) each scored a team-high seven points but the Bears were held to their season low in points. The Lady Rams jumped out to a 24-14 lead at halftime and wouldn't let the Bears within eight points the rest of the way. Winston-Salem State held Lenoir-Rhyne to just two points over the first nine minutes of the second half and limited the Bears to just 25 percent shooting (12-of-49) for the entire contest. Although the Bears did hold a 43-39 advantage on the boards, Lenoir-Rhyne turned the ball over 23 times and hit just one-of-12 three-point field goal attempts. L-R junior guard Danielle Bongiorno (Wilmington, N.C.) also chipped in with five points and dished out a team-high three assists in the losing effort as Winston-Salem avenged an earlier loss to Lenoir-Rhyne this season. Lenoir-Rhyne returns to action on Monday, December 31, when the Bears host Belmont Abbey at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 2:00 p.m. Winston-Salem State, meanwhile, faces Virginia Union in a conference contest on Thursday, January 3, on the road starting at 5:30 p.m.
