 The UNC Asheville Men's Basketball Team (3-6) broke open a close contest late in the second half en route to a win over Lenoir-Rhyne (6-1), 66-55, Wednesday evening at Kimmel Arena. The game
counts as an exhibition for the Bears. The Bulldogs' Keith Hornsby (Williamsburg, Va.) led all scorers with 21 points while Jeremy Atkinson (Elm City, N.C.) added 12 points for UNC Asheville in the win.
L-R was led by junior forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.), who came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) added 10 points and junior guard Jarvis Perry (Willingboro, N.J.) finished with five points, seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists despite the loss.
The two squads were tied at 42 with 7:54 remaining before UNC Asheville took the lead for good.
The Bulldogs' Trent Meyer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) broke the seventh and last tie of the contest with a three-pointer at the 7:09 mark of the second half.
UNC Asheville then used a 17-3 run to build its biggest lead of the game at 62-47 with just under a minute left en route to the win.
The Bulldogs shot 52 percent (25-of-48) for the game and blocked 11 shots to win their second consecutive contest. Meanwhile, the Bears shot just 23-of-65 (35 percent) from the floor in the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to host Barber-Scotia on Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium. UNC Asheville, meanwhile, plays at Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, at Noon.
