The Anderson Men's Basketball Team (3-1, 1-0) rode hot shooting in the second half to rally and defeat Lenoir-Rhyne (4-1, 0-1), 69-65, Wednesday
evening in the South Atlantic Conference opener at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson's Bo Holston (Olney, Md.) finished with a team-high 20 points while All-American Denzail Jones (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) added 15 points as the Trojans shot 77 percent (17-of-22) in the second half en route to its third straight win. L-R junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) scored a career-high 26 points and hit six three-pointers despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) added 19 points including 17 after halftime but the Bears suffered their first setback of the year.
L-R led at the break by a 29-26 score and the contest remained close until Anderson took the lead for good at the 4:03 mark of the second half.
Trailing 61-60, Anderson's Chandler Hash (Greer, S.C.) connected on a three-point play to give the Trojans the lead for good and the Bears couldn't get within two points the rest of the way.
Hash finished with 12 points on the night for Anderson, who also connected on 15-of-17 free throw attempts (88 percent) and beat Lenoir-Rhyne for the fifth straight time.
Anderson is the defending regular season conference champion and is now 22-1 in its last 23 South Atlantic Conference games.
Lenoir-Rhyne will take on Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference game and its home opener on Saturday at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Anderson, meanwhile, hosts Catawba in a league contest Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
