Last week we announced that the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office had
suspended visitation to the county jail as a result of a security
breach. That breach involved a shattered window in the visitation room.
The Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation have completed
the first phase of their investigation and determined that the breach
has likely involved the introduction of contraband into the facility.
According to a report released Friday, Investigators consider the
breach and contraband a danger to inmates, visiting public, detention
staff and local law enforcement. The report says that arrests are
anticipated in the case. The Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of
Investigation are continuing the investigation. They have temporarily
repaired the shattered window, however will not resume visitation until
they’ve installed specialized replacement materials.
