The Hickory High men's soccer team advanced to the Class 3A state championship game with a 1-0 victory over Charlotte Catholic Tuesday night in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association
Class 3A Western Regional Finals in Hickory. Carlos Sevilla scored the game's only goal at the 32-minute mark of the first half. The Red Tornadoes (27-1) will play Jacksonville in the state finals Saturday in Raleigh at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State at 5:05 p.m. Jacksonville (24-1) advanced by knocking off Cardinal Gibbons 6-2 in the eastern finals Wednesday night. The Red Tornadoes are led by head coach Brian Jillings, who was an assistant coach at Watauga High in the late 1990's. Ironcially, WHS is the only team to beat Hickory this season. The Pioneers (18-4-3) defeated Hickory 3-1 back in September, snapping Hickory's 32-game winning streak in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. In Class 4A, Charlotte-Myers Park defeated Asheville-Roberson 1-0 in the western finals. The Mustangs (20-3-1) will play Cary-Green Hope (23-2) in the finals Saturday. Green Hope defeated Wilmington-New Hanover 2-1 in the eastern championship game.
