The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for games played Saturday, Nov. 10. Georgia Southern’s Jerick McKinnon has been
named the Offensive Player of the Week, while The Citadel’s Derek Douglas was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Chattanooga’s Jacob Huesman was tabbed the Freshman of the Week and Appalachian State’s Sam Martin was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Martin, Appalachian State, Sr., P/PK, Fayetteville, Ga.Sam Martin was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and averaged 50.5 yards on four punts as Appalachian State topped Furman 33-28 to earn a share of the Southern Conference championship Saturday. Martin connected on field goals of 27, 47, 19 and 32 yards. His final two field goals accounted for the final six points of the game as the Mountaineers trailed 28-27 midway through the third quarter. With Appalachian State holding a five-point lead with just 1:57 to play, Martin booted a 62-yard punt that was downed at the Furman 1-yard line.Other Nominees: Jerodis Williams (Furman), J.J. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jerick McKinnon, Georgia Southern, Jr., QB, Marietta, Ga.Jerick McKinnon rushed for a career-high 198 yards and three touchdowns as Georgia Southern cruised to a 69-26 win over Howard on Saturday. He averaged 12.4 yards per rush on 16 carries, including a career-long 87-yard touchdown run which was GSU’s longest play from scrimmage this season. McKinnon also completed two of four passes for 32 yards and two touchdowns in the win. It was the seventh time in his career that McKinnon rushed for more than 100 yards.Other Nominees: Andrew Peacock (Appalachian State), Aaron Mellette (Elon), Fabian Truss (Samford), Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga), and Eric Breitenstein (Wofford).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Derek Douglas, The Citadel, Jr., DL, Garland, TexasDerek Douglas scooped up a fumble and raced 21 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter to push The Citadel to a 24-3 lead en route to a 27-24 victory over VMI on Saturday. Douglas recorded his second sack of the day on the previous play and added four tackles in the win. His two sacks resulted in minus-10 yards, and he was credited with a forced fumble in the victory.Other Nominees: Jeremy Kimbrough (Appalachian State), Jonathan Spain (Elon), Gary Wilkins (Furman), Boyd Sasser (Georgia Southern), Durell Hill (Samford), Davis Tull (Chattanooga) and Mike Niam (Wofford).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, Fr., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.Quarterback Jacob Huesman completed a season-high 22 passes for 229 yards as Chattanooga lost at Wofford in overtime, 16-13. Huesman completed nine of 10 passes for 90 yards on third down and converted them into seven first downs. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native added 68 yards rushing on 24 carries and caught one pass for five yards. Trailing 10-3 in the fourth quarter, Huesman engineered an 18-play, 72-yard drive that culminated with a Kendrix Huitt touchdown run to pull the Mocs even and force overtime. The freshman converted four third downs on the drive with two coming on the ground and two through pass completions.Other Nominees: Sean Price (Appalachian State), Matt Dobson (Georgia Southern), and Trey Wesley (Samford).
