L-R Women Advance To SAC Finals PDF Print

The top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (15-1-2) advanced to the championship match of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 3-2 win in double overtime over Catawba (13-7), the fourth seed, Friday

afternoon at Manchester Meadows. L-R freshman midfielder Garcelle Alequine (Wilmington, Del.) scored her second goal of the match in the second overtime to lift the Bears to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit late in the second half, advanced to the league tournament finals for the fourth straight season. L-R will take on second-seeded Wingate (14-1-2) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., in the finals. Wingate officially tied Tusculum at 1-1 but advanced on penalty kicks by a 4-3 count in the semifinal round. The Bears and the Bulldogs will play for the tournament title for the third straight season.
Alequine's goal came just 44 seconds into the second overtime on an assist from senior midfielder Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.). Alequine now has eight goals on the season. Griffin finished the match with a pair of assists as well.
Catawba jumped out to a 2-0 lead with second half goals from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA) and Anna Toole (Greenville, S.C.).
Alequine started the rally with a goal at the 78:01 mark of the match before sophomore defender Hanna Kiebel (Parker, Colo.) tied the contest with a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the win in goal for Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II and unbeaten in its last 14 matches (12-0-2).
Scruggs finished with three saves while Catawba's goalkeeper, Bethany Davis (Salisbury, N.C.), suffered the loss despite stopping 11 shots on the afternoon.
