 Sarah Bae of Raleigh Athens Drive won a playoff to take the individual championship Tuesday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six. Bae and Ashley Osiecki of
New Bern finished 36 holes knotted at 152, three shots ahead of the field and 10 over par in difficult playing conditions. Osiecki had a 73 and Bae a 74 in the final round. The two golfers played the 18th hole even and then Bae won it with a birdie on the second playoff hole when they played the 18th again. Meghan Symonds of Cary Green Hope and Hannah Craver of Pfafftown Reagan finished deadlocked for third at 155, three shots back. Then three golfers wound up in a tie for fifth at 157, including Shelby Osiecki of New Bern, Allyson Markiewicz of Charlotte Ardrey Kell and Gabby Weiss of Southern Pines Pinecrest. Defending individual champion Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Reagan finished tied for 10th. Abbey Hartsell, who won the Northwestern 3A/4A indivdual championship and was the western regional champion last week at the Brushy Mountain Golf Club, finished in a two-way tie for sixth with a two-day total of 158. Hartsell, who was involved in a three-way tie for first after the opening round, fired an 82 on Tuesday and finished six shots back. Savanna Wood, who finished behind Hartsell in the NW3A/4A and was fifth at regionals last week, finished in a three-way tie for 13th with a two-day score of 163, 11 shots off the pace. Wood, who had an 83 on Monday, fired an 80 on Tuesday. Wood, a three-time state qualifier posted her second top-15 finish in a row. She finished fourth last year. Mary Seramur was 73rd with a 214. She bettered her score by six shots on Tuesday with a 104; Tasha Wilson was 75th with a two-day total of 218. Ardrey Kell pulled away on Tuesday in the tight team standings to finish with a 490 total, 11 shots ahead of Pinecrest at 501. Green Hope was third at 504 and Reagan fourth at 508. Alexander Central finished seventh with a team score of 541. The Cougars, who had a team score of 269 Monday finished with a 272 on Tuesday. WHS finished in a two-way tie for tenth (with Fuquay-Varina) with a team score of 595. The Pioneers, who had a 302 in first round Monday, shaved nine shots off their score Tuesday with a 293.
In Class 3A, Hickory finished 11th with a team score of 632; Ledford won the team title with a team score of 506, besting the field by 12 shots. Bree Keller of the Red Tornadoes finished in a three-way tie for 18th with a two-day total of 178. She had a 94 on the final round. Tara Simmons of C.B. Aycock on the Class 3A championship with a two-day score of 154. She finished with a four-shot lead; she had a 77 on the final round.
The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals, and a total of 12 teams and 78 golfers competed in the event, the 10th year that the sport has been classified. It was the second time that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.
