Appalachian State University volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to Southern Conference foe UNCG on Saturday at Fleming Gym. The Mountaineers (6-20, 2-10 SoCon), despite winning the second set, lost to the Spartans (13-11, 7-5) for

the second time this season. Each of the first two sets featured no lead changes and no ties as the winners of each led the entire way. UNCG snagged a 25-21 victory in the first set while the Apps grabbed a 25-22 win in the second set. The third set was much more competitive as the score was tied a total of seven times. After building a 4-1 lead early, UNCG never led by more than one point after App State pulled within one (10-9) until it grabbed a 19-17 lead en route to a 25-21 third-set win.
Appalachian scored the first point of the fourth set, but could not hold on as the Spartans used several late runs to cruise to a 25-15 victory and a 3-1 match win. Lindsey Sauls paced the Apps with 16 kills on the night while Jacqui Spurgeon and Dalton Tolliver each notched 10. Courtney Rhein finished with 21 digs and Lauren Brown tallied 26 assists.
The Spartans saw four players tally 10 or more kills. Olivia Humphries notched a match-high 20 kills while Karrian Chambers and Morgan Freeman each added 10. Kellie Oreweiler had 25 dugs and Ari Lysacek tallied 58 assists. Appalachian State hit just .152 on the attack while UNCG hit at a .255 clip. Each team finished with seven blocks in the contest.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday when they host Western Carolina at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Center.
