![]() The Avery High football team finally got back in the win column Friday night, and the Vikings did it in dramatic fashion. Daniel Childress' 50-yard interception return gave the Vikings (3-8; 1-6 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conferfence) and sealed a 13-6 win at MacDonald Stadium in their season finale. It's the second time Avery has beaten Mitchell (1-10; 0-7) this season. The Vikings knocked off Mitchell 20-13 in their season opener back on August 17. The Vikings forced three turnovers Friday night. The Vikings ran for 165 yards as a team. Luke Childress paced the running game with 65 yards on 17 carries. Dalton Beaver led the Mountaineers with 105 yards on 19 carries.
HUSKIES FALL TO EAST WILKES IN SEASON FINALE
The Ashe County High football team slipped mightily Friday night in its regular-season finale. Following a convincing win at home against Forbush, the Huskies (4-7; 3-5 Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference) closed out the campaign with a 23-8 loss at East Wilkes Friday night. Despite the loss, the Huskies are the No.3 seed among the Class 2A schools in the conference. East Wilkes scored on its first drive of the game, and led the rest of the way. It was 16-0 at halftime.
