A Vilas woman was pinned in the wreckage of her overturned van for over an hour early this morning. Just before midnight, the call went out to Cove Creek Fire/First responders of the crash on Phillips Branch Road off US 321 North, and arriving units found 41 year old Laura Combs
trapped in her crashed 2008 Chrysler van. Watauga Rescue was called along with Watauga Medics as the effort went on to free the woman while WINGS Air Rescue was put on stand-by for a possible transport from near the scene of the crash. It was about 1am before rescuers reported Combs freed from the wreckage, and she was transported by ambulance to Watauga Medical Center suffering a number of injuries. Laura Combs was able to tell Trooper Goldsmith that she swerved to avoid a deer in the road, causing her to lose control of her van. |
