It was a different story the second time around. The Watauga High women's tennis team, which defeated Pfafftown-Reagan 5-4 in their initial meeting back on August 21, came up short in
the rematch Tuesday night. The Raiders (12-3), the No.2 seed from the Central Piedmont 4A Conference, whipped the Pioneers 7-2 at the WHS Tennis Courts in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A state dual-team playoffs. The loss spoiled WHS' (15-1) perfect season. Hannah Petersen at No.2 singles and Nicole Fox at No.3 singles picked up WHS' only wins in the match. Petersen defeated Maggie Smith of the Raiders in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0; Fox knocked off Aja Grant, 6-2, 6-1. But the Pioneers also had their shares of close losses. Meredith Smith, who will represent the Pioneers at the Class 4A individual championships in Raleigh Saturday, dropped a tough match at No.1 singles. She was bested by Montse Mesalles of the Raiders in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 10-12 in the tiebreaker. Emily Burwell lost to China Brown in a three sets, 7-6 (7-1 in the tiebreaker), 4-6, 9-11. Leading 4-2, the Raiders clinched the match in No.1 doubles as Mesalles and Grant defeated Smith and Fox of the Pioneers, 10-6. Smith will play Maggie Kane of Raleigh-Broughton in the opening-round of the state tournament Friday at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh. The semifinals and finals will be played on Saturday.
