UPDATE: Jefferson Fire Destroys Family's Home PDF Print

The Jefferson family of three that lost their home in a fire reported mid afternoon Tuesday has been identified. The fire call came in just at about 2:20 to a home at 203 Martin Street, first Jefferson fire units on the scene reporting fire starting to break through the roof of the structure. West Jefferson Fire and New River were dispatched as mutual aid, and all battled the blaze on two upper levels of the home while neighbors joined the Perry Durham family members—an 11-year old son and 16-year old daughter—as they returned home to find their home on fire.  It took well over an hour to knock down the fire, and much longer to seek and put out hot spots throughout the structure, and firemen had to return twice for rekindles of the fire.  An assessment of the cause and damage was just beginning late in the afternoon, and continues today by the Ashe County Fire Marshal, who said that the house and contents were totaled.
