Lenoir-Rhyne (12-1-1) and UNC Pembroke (8-5-3) played to a 2-2 draw after two overtimes Monday afternoon on the Bears' Senior Day at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex. Freshman midfielder Emmi Dunn (Reading, Pa.) and
unior forward Ariel Dominguez (Annapolis, Md.) scored for the Bears, who remained unbeaten (9-0-1) in their past 10 matches.
Dunn opened the scoring in the 41st minute after heading the ball into the net off a corner kick from freshman defender Brianna Belsky (Egg Harbour Township, N.J.).
UNC Pembroke's Amalia Arvidsson (Boras, SWEDEN) tied the contest just 10 seconds later and the teams went into intermission tied at one. Arvidsson then gave UNC Pembroke the lead at the 55:53 mark of the second half with a shot from the center at about 30 yards out. Arvidsson now has a team-leading 11 goals on the year for the Braves.
The contest remained 2-1 until L-R tied it in the 73rd minute when Dominguez headed the ball into the net off a cross from the left by freshman defender Amber Madriaga (Wailuku, HAWAII). However, the goal would prove to be the last of the contest.
Lenoir-Rhyne, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, held a 29-24 advantage in shots taken while senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) finished with 12 saves including nine in the two overtimes.
UNC Pembroke's goalkeeper, Britney Bennett (Seminole, Fla.), also allowed just two goals in 110 minutes of action to go along with 13 saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Montreat, N.C., to face Montreat on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., while UNC Pembroke plays at USC Aiken on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
