Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jarrod Spears and Joe Anderson have been selected as the South Atlantic Conference Football Offensive and Defensive Players
Of The Week, respectively, league officials announced today. Both players led Lenoir-Rhyne to a 34-21 victory over first-place Mars Hill last Saturday at Moretz Stadium.
Spears, a sophomore halfback from Bunnlevel, N.C., gained a game-high 125 yards rushing on just 10 carries and two scores to lead the Bears offensively.
Spears' touchdown runs of 31 and 47 yards late in the third quarter started the Bears' comeback as L-R rallied from an 18-point deficit to defeat Mars Hill.
Spears leads the squad in rushing yards this season (543) to go along with five touchdowns while averaging 16.5 yards per carry.
Anderson, a sophomore defensive back from Lilburn, Ga., finished with a game-high 14 tackles to go along with a fumble recovery and an interception to lead the Bears.
Anderson's 26-yard interception return for a score in the final seconds of the third quarter against Mars Hill gave Lenoir-Rhyne the lead for good.
Anderson, who earned the league weekly defensive honors for the second time this season, has 30 tackles and two interceptions so far this year.
Carson-Newman's Curt Duncan was named the South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player Of The Week.
Lenoir-Rhyne (5-2, 3-1) travels to Wingate, N.C., to face Wingate (5-3, 4-1) in another key conference game on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
