The Watauga High volleyball team nailed down the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Thursday night with a 3-1 win against South Caldwell in

Sawmills. The Pioneers (14-9 overall; 9-2 NW3A/4A) are 4-0 against South Caldwell and Alexander Central in league play this season.
The Pioneers won 25-15, 20-25, 27-25, 25-21. Sarah Combs led WHS with 42 assists; Channing Hagaman had 21 kills and 22 digs; Rebecca Hayes had 15 kills, eight blocks and four service aces; Meredith Farthing had nine kills and five blocks; Ashlyn VanDyke had 20 digs.
WHS won the JV game, 2-0 (26-24; 25-8). Abby Hicks had 15 assists and five service aces; Kinley McCoury had seven kills; Arley Rodriguez had five kills; Makenzie Presnell had four aces and five digs.
The Pioneers will play in a tri-match Saturday at Northwest Guilford. WHS, Northwest Guilford and Chapel Hill make up the three-team field.

WHS JV FOOTBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

The Watauga High JV football team tasted defeat for the first time this year. The Pioneers (7-1 overall; 3-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) were bested 48-19 by South Caldwell in Sawmills Thursday night.
Quarterback Aaron Dobbins scored on a one-yard touchdown run; and he threw a pair of TD passes in the loss. He hooked up with Michael Ebaugh on an 18-yard scoring pass, and he hooked up with Justin Greer on a 25-yard scoring toss.
The JV team returns home to play Hibriten next Thursday night.
