Appalachian State University quarterback Jamal Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta), who accounted for 398 yards of offense and five touchdowns in Saturday’s 35-23 win over Elon, has been tabbed as the Southern Conference

Offensive Player of the Week as well as the College Football Performance Awards’ National Performer of the Week. Jackson completed 20-of-29 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns and ran 17 times for 94 yards and another score in Appalachian State’s 17th-straight win over Elon. His 398 yards of total offense, 94 rushing yards, four touchdown passes and five touchdowns responsible for were all career highs.
The junior earned conference and national recognition for the second time in six games this season. He was also named the SoCon and national Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for 325 yards and three touchdowns in the Mountaineers’ 35-27 win over No. 12 Montana on Sept. 8.
For the season, Jackson leads the SoCon and ranks among the top 12 nationally in total offense (318.0 ypg — 8th nationally), points responsible for (16.0 pg — t-8th), total passing yards (1,581 — 10th) and passing efficiency (151.25 — 12th). In only the 13th start of his career, he moved into ninth on Appalachian State’s all-time passing yardage list on Saturday with 3,726 career passing yards.

MOUNTAINEERS CONTINUE TO CLIMB IN RANKINGS: For the second-straight week, Appalachian State rose two spots in both of the major NCAA Division I FCS national polls this week, climbing to No. 13 in The Sports Network media poll and No. 12 in the American Football Coaches Association poll.

ANOTHER NATIONALLY RANKED MATCHUP ON TAP: For the third time in six games versus FCS competition this season, Appalachian will square off in a matchup of nationally ranked teams on Saturday when it travels to upstart Samford (5-1, 3-1 SoCon). The Bulldogs entered The Sports Network’s rankings for the first time since 1993 on Monday, coming in at No. 25. Three of Appalachian’s final five regular-season games are against teams that are currently nationally ranked. In addition to Saturday’s battle at No. 25 Samford, the Mountaineers also face No. 5/4 Wofford (5-0, 3-0 SoCon) on Oct. 20 at Kidd Brewer Stadium and travel to No. 7 Georgia Southern (4-1, 3-1 SoCon) on Nov. 3. The Appalachian State record for nationally ranked FCS opponents in a regular season is five, set in 1993 and 2004.

ACEY OUT 6-8 WEEKS: Appalachian State offensive guard Alex Acey (Clay, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a foot injury sustained in Saturday’s win over Elon. The 5-10, 268-pound sophomore will miss game action for the first time in his career due to the injury. The former walk-on has started all 18 games of his career to this point.
A knee injury sustained by sophomore bandit Deuce Robinson (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) against Elon is being evaluated further on Monday. Robinson’s playing status will likely be determined later Monday or Tuesday.
